Progressive Overload: The Only Training Principle That Actually Matters
Progressive overload reliably predicts long-term strength and muscle gains better than any single exercise choice or "optimal" rep range. Here's what it actually means in practice, and four ways to apply it when adding weight to the bar stops working.
What progressive overload actually means
Progressive overload is the gradual increase of stress placed on the body during training. It is not a specific method, a rep range, or a program template — it is the underlying requirement that makes any of those things work at all. Muscles and connective tissue adapt to a demand; if the demand never increases, adaptation plateaus, regardless of how well-designed the rest of the program is.
This is why two lifters following completely different programs can both make progress, and why a single "perfect" program followed without progression eventually stops working entirely.

Why "just add weight" stops working
